What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns get their name from the fact that they cover up the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gums, also known as the tooth’s crown. These tooth-shaped caps restore not only the appearance of your smile, but also the strength and function of the tooth. We custom make each crown to blend in with your surrounding teeth. Crowns can be made from various materials, such as silver and gold. For front teeth, we typically use dental porcelain since it resembles tooth enamel so closely.

Crowns are quite versatile and can be used in a variety of situations, such as when a tooth has:

  • Suffered extreme decay that can’t be treated with a filling alone
  • Been severely injured and essentially needs to be rebuilt
  • Become weakened and has a high risk of fracturing in the future
  • A cosmetic flaw like a crack or chip
  • Been lost and a dental implant needs to be covered
  • Been recently treated with root canal therapy

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

Once Dr. Parmar has determined that a dental crown is right for you, she can begin the process by clearing away any decayed or damaged portions of the tooth. A thin layer of enamel is removed to make sure there is room in your mouth to accommodate the restoration. We take impressions of your teeth to design a crown that looks, feels, and functions just like the rest of your pearly whites. You receive a temporary crown to wear until your permanent one is finished. Once it’s made, return to our office where Dr. Parmar will place and finalize your crown.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

In addition to restoring your tooth’s ability to function the way it should, crowns can also prevent the adjacent teeth from shifting out of place. You’ll also have an aesthetically pleasing smile that will boost your confidence and help you succeed in both your personal and professional life. You’ll experience true joy with this amazing treatment that toes the line between cosmetic and restorative care.

Dental Crowns FAQs

Are Dental Crowns Safe?

Absolutely – dental crowns are quite safe. When placed by a qualified dentist, these caps won’t harm your mouth. On the contrary, they’ll greatly improve your oral health!

For starters, our metal crowns don’t contain mercury. That means they’re non-toxic, so you won’t need to worry about dental damage. The most you might experience is a slight metal allergy. Even then, though, the reaction is usually minor.

Similarly, our non-metal crowns are also toxin-free. Ceramic and zirconia are thus fairly harmless. Some patients may react adversely to dental porcelain, but this is very unlikely.

All that said, there are exceptions. Call your dentist at once if you have gum irritation, redness, or swelling. These could indicate an allergic reaction.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Typical dental crowns last roughly five to 15 years. Still, the lifespan of your own will vary. It’ll depend on a wide range of factors.

One such element is your crown’s material. You see, metal crowns often have a longer lifespan than metal-free ones. However, do note that the difference can be negligible.

A more important factor is your lifestyle. Based on your diet, oral hygiene, and habits, a crown can last long or fail early. If it isn’t treated well, it’ll likely chip or break soon after placement. The crowned tooth could also develop a cavity.

Do Dental Crowns Feel Natural?

Generally, yes – a crown does feel natural. Within a few days of getting one, it should feel similar to your other teeth.

Remember, crowns are made from durable materials. They can withstand chewing forces as well as enamel can. So, eating with them shouldn’t feel strange.

Also, note that a crown is designed for your tooth. A dentist even reshapes the latter to ensure a good fit! As a result, your crown won’t cause awkward sensations. At most, it’ll only feel slightly different to the touch compared to your other teeth. It shouldn’t be very noticeable otherwise.

Does It Hurt to Get a Dental Crown?

To be honest, getting a crown shouldn’t hurt. Dentists take steps to make the process painless. That way, you’ll have a smooth and comfy treatment.

Firstly, the dentist will numb your tooth beforehand. They’ll apply a topical anesthetic so the prep work won’t cause discomfort. You’ll just sense a slight pressure as the dentist and their team proceed.

Of course, you may be a bit sore after the treatment. That’s only natural – the anesthetic will eventually wear off. Even so, this pain should fade within a few days. It’s also easy to manage with over-the-counter pain medication. (If your aches worsen, though, call us at once.)
